EMDR Therapy

Making sense of painful memories so they don’t control the present

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a highly researched, effective therapy for people who feel stuck with the impact of past experiences. When something overwhelming happens, the brain doesn’t always process it properly. Memories, images, emotions, and body sensations can stay “frozen,” showing up later as anxiety, intrusive thoughts, nightmares, low self-worth, or sudden emotional reactions that feel out of proportion.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they lose their intensity. You don’t have to relive every detail or tell your story over and over. Instead, EMDR uses gentle sets of eye movements, tapping, or sounds while you bring to mind aspects of the experience. This supports the brain to file the memory away properly, so it no longer feels like you’re back in the moment..

What EMDR can help with

  • Post-traumatic stress and flashbacks

  • Childhood trauma and attachment wounds

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Grief and loss

  • Shame, guilt, or “I’m not good enough” beliefs

  • Phobias or strong body reactions

  • Stress from accidents, medical procedures, or workplace incidents

What sessions are like

EMDR feels different from traditional talk therapy. Before we begin any reprocessing, the focus is on creating a strong sense of safety and stability. This includes building coping strategies, identifying resources you can draw on, and making sure you feel grounded and supported in the room.

Reprocessing usually doesn’t begin straight away. For most people it starts around the third to fifth session, once we’ve had time to establish these foundations. The timing is unique to your needs and will always be discussed together during your assessment.
